Rod \Rod\, n. [The same word as rood. See Rood.]

1. A straight and slender stick; a wand; hence, any slender
bar, as of wood or metal (applied to various purposes).
Specifically:
(a) An instrument of punishment or correction;
figuratively, chastisement.
